There is now a place in Carbondale that will accept # 5 plastics.
The Neighborhood Co-op Grocery is now part of the recycling program called Gimme 5. The program gives stores the opportunity to take clean # 5 containers. The Co-Op's Outreach and Owner Services Coordinator Jerry Bradley encourages people to come to his store to recycle these #5 plastics, since the City of Carbondale or the Southern Recycling Center will not take them at this time. He says # 5 plastics are popular with manufacturers. They're commonly found in razors, cups, and containers because of its durability. Bradley says you can determine if your plastic container is a # 5 by looking at the resin code on the container, which will have a 5 inside a triangle.
Preserve, an eco-focused company that makes a variety of kitchen and bath products from recycled materials, is spearheading the Gimme 5 program to produce toothbrushes and razor blade handles.
