One person was shot not far from the Southeast Missouri State University campus in Cape Girardeau on Labor Day.

When police arrived just before 3 p.m. Monday in an area at North Park and Themis Streets, they found a suspect who matched the description of the shooter on the front porch of a residence. He was detained without incident and later identified as 34-year-old Jamala Garmon of Cape Girardeau. Cops also seized a loaded, semi-automatic handgun sitting next to Garmon on a table on the porch.

Officers then located the victim, an adult male from Cape Girardeau, lying on the curb in front of this residence with two gunshot wounds to the torso. He was taken to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Garmon reportedly was engaged in a verbal altercation with the victim for a short period of time prior to the shooting incident.

Garmon faces Assault in the 1st degree and Armed Criminal Action charges.
