In its 16th year, the Southern Illinois Alternative Gift fair supports the local region

After missing a year because of COVID-19, the Southern Illinois Alternative Gift fair is returning this Sunday to the Carbondale Civic Center.

Over two dozen non-profits will be on hand to sell items to help southern Illinois. But, some vendors say gift-selling is just one part of the event.

Jess Jobe is a volunteer with the Alternative Gift Fair.

"One of the things that the organizations that participate every year tell us is that they like being in the same space as these these other non-profit organizations. It's as much of a friend-raiser as it is a fund-raiser for these non-profit groups."

The event runs from 2-5PM and masks are required. Jobe adds a donation of one non-perishable food item is requested, but not required, for entrance.

Donations from this year's Southern Illinois Alternative Gift fair will go to various Southern Illinois food assistance programs.
