(Updated: 6:00 pm - 1/5/25) - The first winter storm of 2025 has knocked out power and made travel hazardous.
As of Sunday evening more than 30,000 customers are without power in southern Illinois. Heavy amounts of ice from sleet and freezing rain has caused numerous power failures across the region.
As of 6:00 pm on Sunday Ameren reported more than 14,000 outages; Egyptian Electric more than 4,800 outages; and Southeastern Illinois Electric Coop nearly 13,000 outages.
Majority of the outages are along and south of the IL-Route 13 corridor. Randolph, Jackson, Williamson, Union, and Saline Counties account for more than half of the power outages reported. You can track current outages here.
The Illinois Department of Transportation reports all major interstates and highways in southern Illinois remain partially to completely ice and snow covered.
The northbound lanes of I-57 at Sesser have been closed most of Sunday afternoon following a semi-tractor trailer truck that jack-knifed across both of the northbound lanes. Illinois State Police have reported numerous closing along I-64 and I-57 because of storm related accidents and impassable driving conditions.
