National Weather Service Graphic for winter storm expected to hit area beginning January 23rd.

A strong shot of winter weather will hit the WSIU listening area this weekend. Meteorologists say heavy snowfall is expected to cover southern Illinois, southern Missouri, and much of Kentucky beginning Friday night.

Most of the area could see at least 4 inches of snow with some places receiving 8 inches or more.

Justin Gibbs, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Paducah says the heaviest amounts will fall Saturday night. Even though the storm is several days away, now is the time to begin adjusting your weekend plans, "If you've got plans Saturday, Sunday, and probably even Monday, given the temperatures, it's well within reason to begin making plans based on this."

Dangerous Cold will settle into the area Saturday night. Sunday night lows will drop as low as 5 to 10 degrees below zero. The forecast can change, but right now ice looks like it will hit southern Kentucky into Tennessee.
