The Pittsburgh Pirates have fired manager Derek Shelton.
The former Saluki player was in his sixth season in the Pirates dugout. He had a .410 winning percentage at 306-440. The team started this season with a 12-26 record, the 3rd worst record in Major League Baseball.
Pirates Bench Coach Don Kelly has been named manager.
Shelton was on the last Saluki baseball team to reach the NCAA Tournament, back in 1990. He played 46 games in the minor leagues. He began his professional coaching career in 1997.
