The Daniel H. Brush Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) invites you to a dynamic presentation on visitors to Cairo, IL, given by Darrel Dexter. ABOUT OUR SPEAKER: At the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, Cairo, Illinois, has witnessed a multitude of visitors pass through its streets—some famous, others infamous. Cairo has hosted a fascinating array of figures, including 11 Presidents, 10 major Presidential candidates, numerous Civil War generals, authors, woman’s rights and civil rights activists, entertainers, and others. Dexter teaches history at Egyptian Community School and is the author of Pulling off the Sheets: The Second Ku Klux Klan in Southern Illinois and Bondage in Egypt: Slavery in Southern Illinois, referred to as “the most comprehensive account to date of racial slavery in Illinois.”
