The Southern Chapter of the Illinois Native Plant Society will hold a native plant sale fundraiser on Saturday, May 3rd, from 8 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Green-up you thumb and your yard with native perennial wildflowers and grasses, locally grown at Southernwood Gardens, Anna. There will be 39 species of native flowering plants and 4 species of native grasses available for purchase. Plants will be $10 a pot. First come first serve. Quantities are limited to the early bird gets the bloom!
Southern Illinois Flute Choir Concert
The Southern Illinois Flute Choir is made up of local flute enthusiasts. Instruments include the contra bass flute, bass flute, alto flute, c flute and piccolo. They will be performing works of Bach, Handel, Rossini, Joplin and Sousa.

Cinco de Mayo Festival The Village of Alto Pass is proud to present their Third Annual Cinco de Mayo Festival. The music, dance, cultural extravaganza and party that is the Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration will occur on May 3rd, from 9:00 AM until 9:00 PM. Please join our quaint little village in celebrating our vibrant community. The Festival will be held at the Alto Pass Park in downtown Alto Pass. The day’s festivities will include, authentic Mexican food vendors, Margaritas, Cantaritos, and Beer, a Parade, the Cobden High School Folklorico Dance Troupe, The Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago, Los Viejitos De Corazon Purepecha, Mexican art show by Alto Pass’s own Arte Duran (Juana Duran), pinata, and activities for children, music from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM. Explore handmade pottery of southern Illinois during the tenth annual Shawnee Hills Pottery Trail on Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. This event is an open studio and pottery sale featuring works by thirteen potters at seven studio stops in or around Carbondale, Alto Pass, Murphysboro, and Ava.
This year’s potters include; Dan Johnson, Steve Grimmer, Harris Deller, Rob Lorenz, Karen Fiorino, Stephanie Dukat, Kari Woolsey, Gene Smout, Beth Smout, Cameron Smith, Keren Ya’ Ari, Kit Davis, and Micheal Polkingtonhorne. At each studio stop potters will display works and have pottery for sale. The potters will be available to give studio tours and answer questions about their pottery. All of the pieces for sale are handmade and food safe. Each artist has a unique style and technique ranging from functional pieces such as mugs, plates and bowls to decorative and sculptural pieces with various textures, images, designs, and colors.
The trail is a family-friendly event designed to celebrate the quality handmade pottery being created in southern Illinois. The potters wish to inform and educate the public on the value and beauty of handmade craft in our region, as well as, bring attention to the wonderful attractions in southern Illinois. In the tenth year there are some new stops on the trail this year. The seven studios are a short drive from one another and all can be visited in the course of a day or weekend trip through the foothills of Shawnee National Forest. Event attendees are encouraged to visit each stop and get their trail passport stamped for a chance to win a cup from one of the thirteen potters.

May Carbondale "At the Table" Dinner & Dialogue Event
The City of Carbondale will celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month during the Carbondale “At the Table” Dinner & Dialogue series on Tuesday, May 20th at the Carbondale Civic Center. The theme for this month’s discussion is A Country of Migrants: Honoring the Integral Role of Asian Americans in Shaping the American Identity. William Lo, Executive Director of the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, will kick off the evening by sharing his family’s migrant story and reflecting on AAPI history and heritage.
The Carbondale “At the Table” Dinner & Dialogue Series will occur on the third Tuesday of the month through June. The Carbondale “At the Table” Dinner & Dialogue Series brings an intersection of topics ranging from culture, racism, history, and racial healing to the table through facilitated conversations so that community members from diverse backgrounds can engage in dialogue while enjoying a community meal served by New Kahala Chinese Cuisine.
