A southern Illinois volunteer organization has been highlighted as a finalist for the 2024 Governor's Hometown Awards.

Marion Connects is made up of local leaders and residents working to make a positive impact in the local community.

The group organizes monthly “Third Thursday” events that are designed to build community and create memories.

Local businesses donate time and resources to make these events free for all who attend.

The other finalists were the Challenger Baseball program in Edwardsville, which is tailored to individuals with developmental disabilities...Teen Turf in Amboy, a year-round free after-school and summer program for children and Social Change in Chicago, a nonprofit organization that organizes events such as food giveaways, health fairs, expungement clinics, and back-to-school events.

The Gold Cup winner ended up being Challenger Baseball in Edwardsville.

All four communities were given a highway sign that will be installed later this year.
