Illinois Humanities and Legacy Training Inc. invites the public to celebrate the culture of Cairo and the region surrounding the convergence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers.
The conference, titled Confluences, will highlight the rich history of culture and arts in Cairo, discussing the importance of its preservation through various presentations.
Confluences will feature a guided bus tour of several historic sites in Cairo, including the Ward Chapel A.M.E Church, the Public Library, the U.S Colored Troops monument, and the mansions of Washington Avenue.
Presentations will report on topics including the similarities between the setting of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” and Cairo, both located along the Ohio River, and the "Reporting on Rural America" student-led project.
The conference will conclude with a reception at the Harold S. Jones Fine Arts Center, with refreshments and a musical performance by Cairo native and saxophonist Henry Herron. Plus, singer-songwriters Curt Carter and Tom Connelly of Carbondale.
The Confluences conference at Cairo Junior and Senior High School is on Saturday, April 26, and is free and open to the public. Registration online in advance is recommended.
