Carbondale United March On Washington St

Friday evening Carbondale United is honoring the 57th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s march on Washington.

Organizer’s with Carbondale United are commemorating the historic March on Washington lead by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. before his “I Have A Dream” Speech.

The group will symbolically march from Attucks park to Washington Street, to the police station before returning to the park.

Carbondale United Co-founder Nancy Maxwell says they want everyone to dress professionally to re-experience the spirit of the march in the sixties.

“At the original march that Martin Luther King marched everybody dressed up, in that era everybody dressed up they didn’t have on a t-shirt and jeans and I wanted to bring back that feel to this march by asking everybody to put on some dress clothes and march.”

The event will feature speeches, singers, poetry and more.

Everyone is expected to wear a mask and follow social distancing guidelines.
