Dozens of high school students reunited Wednesday for the spring session of Senator Dale Fowler’s annual Student Advisory Council.
The Student Advisory Council mimics the legislative process and how government works.
Last fall they got together to discuss policy issues and create proposals to present to the group and vote for their favorite.
Senator Fowler says in the spring they return to debate the mock legislation proposal.
“They chose the requirement for mental health training for all law enforcement in the state of Illinois, so they all know the issues with mental health and how critical it is and the resources that need to be available so that's what they're going to actually be debating today, so it's going to be a lot of fun. It's a great opportunity for these students.”Senator Dale Fowler
The students also heard from SIU Provost Dr. Meera Komarraju, Jackson County States Attorney Joe Cervantez and SIU Alum and Olympic Athlete Deanna Price.
