Freshmen enrollment is up overall at Illinois public universities for the third consecutive year, according to the latest report from the Illinois Board of Higher Education.
The IBHE reports total fall 2023 undergraduate enrollment at Illinois public universities increased three-tenths of a percent compared to the previous year. Freshmen enrollment at Illinois public universities increased by 1.5 percent compared to the fall semester of the 2021-22 academic year. This bucked freshmen enrollment at the national level which decreased a little over six percent at all public universities.
The report also reveals enrollment of African American and Latino students increased in Illinois while enrollment of the same groups dropped nationally.
SIU-Carbondale is the only Illinois public university to see a gradual increase in its first-time-full-time freshmen each year since the 2019-2020 academic year.
