Vienna High School launches new homeschool seminar co-op

Vienna High School is starting a homeschool seminar co-op for students in the area.

The new program aims to connect homeschooled students with resources from the Vienna school district.

Students and families will have access to scholarship applications, military recruiter, job shadowing, college and university visits and so much more.

Joshua Stafford, superintendent of Vienna schools, says that he wants all students to feel as though "career connected and life ready".

"Thinking about, okay are there ways that we can connect? To provide services? Because at the bottom line, end of the day, whether you're a homeschool kid or a regular public school kid, we want every kid in our community to be successful," Stafford said.

For the past few years homeschooled students in the area have been able to take drivers ed. classes at Vienna.

The homeschool seminar co-op will allow student to take not only drivers ed. at the school but any other classes they might chose to.

At the start of the 2024-2025 academic year Vienna schools also began allowing homeschool students to participate in sports through the district.

With the inception of the program in January, Stafford says that they have about 18 students signed up to be a part of the program, more than the school was expecting in its first year.

The program is still incredibly new and some families may chose to not take part. Stafford says this is fine they just want to make the resources available to those who do.

"The reality is we'll have some homeschool families, likely, who chose not to engage in the homeschool seminar co-op," Stafford said. "And that's fine, they're certainly not obligated to, but we just want to leave those doors open and if they chose to utilize those services we want them to know they're certainly welcome to do so."
