Charter Communications, Inc., has opened applications for their annual scholarship program Spectrum Scholars. They will award 15 college juniors $20,000 each over their junior and senior years of college.
Byron Coulter, a graduate of Southern Illinois University- Edwardsville, is a past Spectrum Scholar. He says through his scholarship he was able to get a different perspective of what’s to come in his professional life.
"College and the real job field are two different things," Coulter said. "So getting this experience helps you broaden your perspective of the job world."
Coulter says he was able to develop his networking and communication skills through the program.
Participants are also paired with a mentor that is there to support them through the duration of the program. Coulter says his mentor, Michael Ollenu, helped lead him in the right direction and supported him throughout the scholarship.
""He just helped lead me in the right direction as far as, where I want to go in my career," Coulter said. "He took what I told him and learned about me and what I did growing up as far as technology, and he basically led me on a different path than when I was going in."
Coulters scholarship and internship ended up leading to a job as a developmental operation engineer for Spectrum after his graduation from SIUE.
Applications for the Spectrum Scholars program are open now through April 4th. For more information on Spectrum Scholars, visit https://corporate.charter.com/spectrum-scholars
