US Sen. Dick Durbin and patient Maverick Thompson helped celebrate the opening.

US Senator Dick Durbin visited southern Illinois Thursday as part of the grand opening of a new physical therapy center run by Southern Illinois Healthcare.

Durbin said he was glad to be able to contribute federal dollars to building the center so that southern Illinois families don't need to travel long distances for healthcare.

"We've put a million dollars into this facility and I think it's money well spent. It was not the complete cost of this facility but a major part of it, and it helps to move to a level of professionalism and care that southern Illinois is entitled to. Entitled to. Because I know what families face if they don't have good rehab facilities locally," he said.

The new center includes a dedicated wing for pediatric rehab, areas for work-related rehabilitation and a sports medicine area.
