The Jackson County Health Department says now is the time to get a flu shot for the upcoming season.
Director of Nursing Karen Brown says it's difficult to predict the severity of each flu season. But, she says the best thing to do is get the vaccine before any positive cases hit the community.
"It takes about two weeks to develop a good immune response to the vaccine. Then, that way you're insuring you have the maximum protection before the virus starts to circulate. In some years, we've had cases starting to peak before Thanksgiving. Traditionally, the peak is any time between December and February."
Flu shots are available on a walk-in basis at the Jackson County Health Department from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
