U.S. Senator Dick Durbin says it's time to put politics aside when it comes to getting more people vaccinated against COVID-19.
Durbin points to misinformation - and disinformation - as reasons people are reluctant to get the shot. But the Illinois Democrat says the Delta variant of the virus should prompt more people to take action.
"The vaccines that we all have access to right now will stop the Delta variant in its tracks. It'll save your life. And with the spread of the Delta variant, the reality for Americans is quickly becoming 'get vaccinated, or risk contracting serious or a deadly case of COVID-19."
In his home state, Durbin points to case counts and hospitalizations rising rapidly in the Metro-East and southern Illinois, and growing steadily in other areas.
Southern Illinois Healthcare reported a dozen patients on their COVID floor late last week, and leaders there say most of the patients were unvaccinated.
Durbin says he understands a distrust in government - but urges people who are unsure to talk to a healthcare professional they trust.
"At this moment, if you're still unvaccinated against COVID-19, and you have questions, I'm sure you won't reach out to your Senator or Congressman. Reach out to a medical professional that you trust. Talk do you doctor, ask them whatever questions you wish. But make sure you have the facts on your side."
