Governor Pritzker Highlights Breast Cancer Awareness and Importance of Early Detection

Governor JB Pritzker, alongside the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), is urging residents to prioritize early breast cancer detection as October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Illinois.

To further promote awareness, the governor has designated October 18 as Mammography Day, encouraging individuals to schedule their screenings.

With more than 11,000 women expected to be diagnosed in Illinois this year, early detection remains the most effective means of improving survival rates.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women, but regular mammograms can detect the disease at an early stage when treatment is most successful.

In support of the cause, the Illinois Lottery has introduced the Carolyn Adams Ticket for the Cure, with all proceeds going toward breast cancer research, education, and awareness initiatives.

For individuals who are uninsured or underinsured, IDPH operates the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (IBCCP), offering free mammograms and cervical cancer screenings.

Dr. Sameer Vohra, Director of IDPH, emphasizes that breast cancer affects not only women but men, non-binary, and transgender individuals as well.

It is vital for everyone to understand their risk and consult healthcare providers for appropriate screenings.

Mammography Day on October 18 serves as a timely reminder for all Illinoisans to prioritize their health and schedule a screening.
