As a result of recent flooding throughout the region, the Southern 7 Health Department's Environmental Health Services encourages residents to test their water wells for potential contamination.
According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, some contaminants may harm people's health and are only detectable through lab testing. If residents have noticed any changes in the condition of the water, including taste, color, or smell, it should be tested.
Water should also be tested in instances of flooding or if you have replaced your well’s parts. It should also be checked if land disturbances or improper waste disposal have occurred.
Those wanting to test their water can purchase a kit from the Southern 7 Health Department for $20 or arrange for a department sanitarian to collect a sample for $50. It will then be tested for E. coli and Coliform at an IDPH lab, and the department will provide further instructions if needed.
Contact the Southern 7 Health Department for any questions regarding water safety conditions.
