The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board has granted approval for the expansion and modernization of a mental health facility on the campus of SIH Harrisburg Medical Center.
The $20 million project will create a new 12-bed medical-psychiatric inpatient unit and upgrade existing spaces, increasing the SIH Mulberry Center’s acute mental illness bed capacity from 30 to 42.
SIH says expanded access to mental health care is urgently needed in Southern Illinois. The SIH Mulberry Center has often operated at full capacity, leaving nearly 700 individuals each year without the help they need.
The new medical-psychiatric unit will serve patients with acute mental health needs and conditions like diabetes, heart disease or other illnesses.
A public ceremony to celebrate the start of construction is scheduled for June 24 at SIH Harrisburg Medical Center.
