The State Historic Preservation Office of IDNR recently approved five historic preservation projects totaling more than $117,000 dollars.
Carbondale received a $21,000 grant to update their historic preservation plan.
This grant will be used to survey to northeast quadrant of the city’s residential district to be incorporated into the city’s preservation plan that was last performed in 2002.
City Planner Ashley Gibson says the grant will be used to hire a consult to build an inventory of the historic place in that area.
“There's been a lot of work done in the past to recognize a lot of these sites. There hasn't been a whole lot of work done to actually get them dedicated, so we're kind of wanting to take the next step and getting these places dedicated so that they can be protected.”
Once they’re dedicated as historic markers the properties can qualify for additional grants for renovation or restoration.
