Extradition proceedings are underway

A Cairo man has been arrested in Texas in connection to a homicide in Carbondale.

U.S. Marshals and police in Houston have arrested 20-year old Daurice Morse - who faces first-degree murder charges in Jackson County.

Morse was indicted after the October 2022 shooting death of 19-year old Jacob Gary of Marion. At the time of the shooting, Carbondale Police reported Gary and Morse were acquaintances, and had been involved in an ongoing dispute.

Court records show a warrant was issued for Morse's arrest last October, and the indictment handed down in November.

The Jackson County State's Attorney's Office is working with Texas authorities on extradition.
