A former correctional officer at the Pinckneyville Correctional Center pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges stemming from the beating of an inmate.

The U.S. attorney reports 35-year-old Cord Williams of Vergennes admitted to violating the inmate's civil rights and falsifying incident reports.

Two other correctional officers are also charged in the indictment. They are 25-year-old Christian Pyles of Christopher and 52-year-old Mark Maxwell of Pinckneyville.

Williams and Pyles were charged with beating a fully restrained inmate in April of 2022. Maxwell is accused of failing to intervene - he was an acting lieutenant at the prison at the time.

As part of Williams' plea, he admitted the beating occurred to punish the inmate for punching another correctional officer.

Court records show injuries to the inmate included facial fractures, multiple lacerations, a chipped tooth and lung damage.
