The Illinois State Police announced they will conduct Nighttime Enforcement patrols in Williamson County during May. NITE patrols allow the ISP to focus on preventing impaired driving, which is most common between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Alcohol and drug impairment are estimated to be a factor in almost half of all fatal car and motorcycle accidents in Illinois. Most fatal crashes also occur at night. Officers will also focus on enforcing laws regarding proper seatbelt and car seat usage, speeding, distracted driving, and other Vehicle Code violations.
The project is funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation.
