Carbondale Domestic Conflict: Suspect Charged with Endangering the Life or Health of a Child

Nobody was hurt in an overnight standoff in Carbondale.

Carbondale police officers responded to a disturbance on the 400 block of Poplar Street at 1:38 this morning.

Upon arrival, Officers learned that the suspect, 39-year-old Joseph D. Clopton of Carbondale, battered an acquaintance and then barricaded himself inside his residence with his infant child.

Officers applied for and received a Jackson County warrant to enter and search the apartment. They continued to negotiate with Clopton from outside the apartment for several hours.

A civic alert was sent by the officers warning the public.

Clopton surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody around 7:46 a.m. The infant was not injured and was turned over to the mother.

Clopton was charged with Domestic Battery, Endangering the Life or Health of a Child, and Resisting a Police Officer.
