The city of Herrin will hold a meeting to discuss whether or not a dispensary will be allowed to operate in the city at 6 pm on Wednesday at Herrin City Hall.
Mayor Steve Frattini said the meeting isn't about the merits of legal recreational marijuana, since that issue has already been decided by the state. It's just about whether Herrin will allow recreational sales.
"So the question is, dispensary or no dispensary. What's your flavor?" Frattini said. "And the idea being that it potentially would generate some tax revenue, thereby giving some tax relief, perhaps, eventually, to the citizens of the city."
Frattini says speakers will be limited to 3 minute comments during the meeting. After hearing from residents, the issue of a dispensary would go to the zoning board, to look at new zoning ordinances on where a dispensary would be allowed to operate. The city council could hold a vote on the issue as early as February.
