The Carbondale Police Department says thanks to help from the public, a juvenile is safe after he was spotted walking in the roadway on East Main Street near Reed Station Road.

Late Wednesday morning, Carbondale police officers responded to the scene while other department personnel accessed the surveillance cameras in the area and observed the juvenile was placing himself in great danger by walking in the roadway across several lanes of traffic with vehicles moving at high rates of speed.

The first responding officer found the juvenile on the side of the roadway and out of traffic. The officer determined the juvenile suffers from a condition that placed him in danger.

The officer was able to identify and contact the juvenile’s parents, who did not realize he had left home.

The juvenile was returned to his parents safe and in good health and there are no criminal charges associated with the incident.

The police department says it's very appreciative of the citizens who reported the child in the roadway and the officers’ responsive actions.

Officers say the efforts of all involved likely prevented a great tragedy.
