As Memorial Day weekend kicks off the boating season, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Conservation Police are urging everyone to boat responsibly. The key message: wear a life jacket and never operate a boat under the influence.
Officials say most accidents happen in clear weather, often with experienced operators who haven’t taken safety classes. In 2024 alone, Illinois saw 63 boating accidents, 15 deaths, and a rising number of arrests for boating under the influence.
Life jackets are required for all passengers and are mandatory for anyone under 13 on open water. IDNR also offers free boating safety courses across the state and encourages boaters to get certified before heading out.
