The St. Louis District Dairy Council is taking advantage of June being National Dairy Month to warn people to be careful about the nutritional value of milk substitutes.
Council dietitian Kristin Neusel says these alternative beverages are often plant-based drinks or solutions made from rice, soy, nut and hemp products. She says they don't share the same nutrient package as milk, and often are more costly. Neusel says she wouldn't necessarily recommend them for people who are lactose intolerant either. She says there is lactose-free milk that still contains the nine essential nutrients found in regular milk.
But, Neusel says people suffering from a milk protein allergy may find the alternative beverages beneficial.
