Sen. Forby Visits Pulaski Co. Facility

Southern Illinois State Senator Gary Forby was in Karnak Tuesday to tour the M.A.P. Training Center.

MAP is a non-profit organization that provides education and day training service to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities while helping them become as independent as possible.

They provide vocational training and well as adult education with the help of Shawnee Community College.

The Senator visited with employees and attendees to see how the state budget impasse could affect their future.

"I just really didn't know the system and really went on and how they got their money and everybody involved, I didn't know that the college was involved, mass transit involved, the public and you got three different counties in this here today and it's a great thing here that they're doing."

Executive director Bob Putney says that they did receive funding based on the state’s FY-2015 budget, but expects there will be cuts once the FY-2016 budget is finalized.

“ As far as the funding we’ve received we haven’t had any increases in years so we’re trying to make do with what we have, cuts could potentially be devastating to some of the things you’ve seen with the community college class that we have here and things like that, those are programs that potentially could be affected, we might not be able to offer those to the individuals we serve any longer.”

If they receive cuts Putney says that may result in MAP training Center having to cut back on the number of people they can enroll in services.

They currently serve over 70 individuals from Massac, Alexander and Pulaski Counties.
