ON THIS DAY 1955 Elvis Presley makes his 1st TV appearance on a local video broadcast of the popular radio program "Louisiana Hayride" from the Shreveport Municipal Auditorium in Shreveport, Louisiana

In Makanda, join local author, Kimberly France, as she discusses research on her recently published book Black Settlements in Southern Illinois. Her presentation, in collaboration with local historian Darrell Dexter, will focus on Union County. The presentation is this Saturday from 2-3pm. Contact the Giant City State Park Visitors Center for more information about this program.

The Williamson County Early Childhood Cooperative is hosting Preschool Screenings for the upcoming school year. Game-like activities for children will measure their development, growth, hearing, vision & speech. All families with children ages birth to five are encouraged to attend, regardless of income. The screenings are this week in Carterville, Herrin, Johnston City, Crab Orchard & Marion. Appointments are required.
