In 1868, Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, was first widely observed to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of Gen. John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former Union sailors and soldiers.

The Carterville Lions Club invites you to visit the beautiful American Flag display at Cannon Park today. Take a stroll through hundreds of flags that line the walking path and read the names of past and present persons in the military. It is a visual that drives home the cost of our freedom. Each flag represents a local who served in the nation's military, with names from some of the country's earliest conflicts to its most recent.
