· ON THIS DAY in 1983 First solo helicopter flight around the world

· Australian Dick Smith became the first person to fly a helicopter around the world solo. He started his trip in August, 1982 and it took him around a year to finish his trip.

In Marion, the Summer Movie Series continues at the Marion Civic Center this Thursday at 10am. Admission is free, and concessions will be open.

In Springfield, “Friday Night Jazz & Blues” continues this week with Samba Llamas. The show is free, accessible, and family friendly, located at Boone’s at 301 West Edwards Street. Concerts are every Friday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M

It’s not too late for children to find fun, adventure and great learning experiences at SIU’s 2024 summer camps, including those focused on sports and art. Camps are still open for registration for children of all ages interested in the academic, athletic, art and music categories. Track & Field, Football, Soccer & Art camps continue in July. In Makanda, celebrate Lughnasadh (luna-suh) harvest celebration with the Southern Illinois Pagan Alliance. Sunday, July 28 beginning at noon at Shelter 4 at Giant City State Park. This is a public ritual. All are welcome.

The ritual is at 2 p.m. with a potluck will follow. Those attending are invited to bring seasonal harvest items for the altar. SIPA rituals are free and open to the public. Ample free parking is available at Shelter 4. Carpooling is encouraged. Please bring a friend. Well-behaved pets are welcome. More information is on the SIPA Facebook page.
