Bear Productions, a youth-led theater group, will present Harmony, an original musical written, directed, and performed entirely by Southern Illinois kids. Written by 13-year-olds Emmett Whiteford and Jace Burns, Harmony follows a screen-addicted teen who rediscovers joy and connection at summer camp. The production features 25 original songs and a cast of more than 20 youth from Carterville, Herrin, Marion, and Johnston City. The show runs August 1st through the 3rd at the Herrin Civic Center. Tickets are $10 in advance for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under.

Southeastern Illinois College will host the grand opening of the new Stanford D. Williams Career and Training Center on Tuesday, Aug. 5, from noon to 3 p.m. at 1700 College Ave. in Carmi. The event will begin with a ribbon cutting ceremony at noon in partnership with the Carmi Chamber of Commerce, followed by remarks from college leaders and local and state officials, building tours, and light refreshments throughout the afternoon. The Illinois Commission on Discrimination and Hate Crimes and the City of Carbondale host “Help Stop Hate: Carbondale Community Conversation” on Monday, August 25 at 6:00 p.m. at the Carbondale Civic Center. Residents are encouraged to share about their experiences with discrimination and hate. The input gathered will help guide the state’s future strategies for confronting hate and creating safer communities. This upcoming event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.
