SIU is hosting a campaign this week to help smokers quit.
Brianna Sinche, the school's wellness coordinator and tobacco cessation educator, says the program is through the American Cancer Society which works with college campuses across the nation to have a completely smoke free campus for one day.
"Lots of times it just takes that one day. That one day to start quitting. And so this initiative is really just trying to get that, that one day for students, or even faculty and staff to take the initiative and quit for that one day."
She says the campaign with the American Cancer Society is called 1 Day Stand.
"Specifically the tobacco free generation campus initiative, which really is trying to work with college campuses across the nation to work with individuals who do smoke tobacco and really have one day in the year that we can have a completely smoke free and tobacco free campus."
99 percent of all regular tobacco users start by age 26 and smoking is the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the U.S.
SIU-C is a smoke-free campus along with at least 2,200 other campuses across the country.
The smoke-free day is Wednesday, November 14th.
