SIU first-year law and medical school students focus on professional responsibility

More than 230 first-year students from the law school and SIU School of Medicine will gather to discuss medical and legal issues.

More than 230 first-year students from the law school and SIU School of Medicine will gather to discuss medical and legal issues. This tradition at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is part of the 27th annual Interdisciplinary Professional Responsibility Day.

The students will be divided into 15 groups, each with a mix of law, medical, and physician assistant students to discuss and analyze current issues, with the assistance of a legal or medical facilitator. The groups will then form larger discussions on topics related to abortion, the use of informed consent, physician-assisted suicide Medicaid research, vaccine mandates, and the use of AI in decision-making.

Facilitators this year include physicians, medical faculty and staff, law school faculty, local attorneys, and a judge. The discussion is on Friday at the SIU Simmons Law School on the Carbondale campus.
