Southern Illinois University Carbondale this month will host an agriculture event in Belleville aimed at farmers while opening the world of farming to the public.

The university’s 58th annual Ag Field Day is set for Thursday, July 17, at SIU’s Belleville Research Center. The event is free and open to the public and will be held rain or shine.

All are invited to join farmers, ag professionals and community members for a morning full of insights from experts in weed science, soil health, insect management, weather trends and more. Organizers expect around 200 people to attend the event, which will be in Belleville only this year. Pre-registration is not required.

Sponsored by the SIU College of Agricultural, Life, and Physical Sciences, the event begins with a welcome address at 8:30 a.m. at the research center, located at 2036 Charles Lane, near Scott Air Force Base.

The program, which begins at 9 a.m., will feature speakers on such topics as corn and soybean trends, weed control and herbicide programs, and cover crops, among others. A representative from the Illinois Farm Bureau also will be on hand to provide an update on that organization’s efforts.

Lunch will be served at noon, and attendees are invited to stay for additional weed science trial tours. Certified crop adviser credits are available.
