Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s popular, Valentine-themed climbing competition, Love at First Onsight, returns to campus Saturday, Feb. 15, and registration is now underway.

The challenge is open to SIU students, Recreational Sports and Services members and the entire community. Anyone age 16 or older can join in the fun, and people of all skill levels are welcome at the 11th annual contest in the Student Recreation Center’s Bouldering Cave at the east gym area. The cave is similar to a climbing wall, but it offers enhanced features and wall designs. Recreational Sports and Services and Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center are sponsoring the climbing adventure contest, and this year, the registration fee has dropped to $35.

Vie for trophies, bragging rights

Climbers will compete in four different V-scale skill divisions:

  • Beginner, V0-V2.
  • Intermediate, V3-V4.
  • Advanced, V5-V6.
  • Elite, V6+.

The competition has grown through the years. In 2025, there will be three different heats, giving participants a chance to choose a time slot.

Heat times are:

  • 10 a.m.
  • Noon.
  • 2 p.m.

Check-in and waiver completion is at 9 a.m. The three competitors in each division earning the best scores will advance to the finals at 4 p.m. The awards ceremony will follow.

Register now

Organizers highly recommend that participants sign up in advance as space is limited and that ensures they can compete in their preferred time slot. If spots are available, people can also register at the Love at First Onsight event. Sign up online. Commemorative T-shirts will be available for purchase for $15.
