A team from SIU Medicine and Southern Illinois Healthcare traveled to Costa Rica this spring to provide care in the remote village of Chira Island. The group included physicians, students, and residents from SIU’s Center for Family Medicine.
With over $4,000 in donations, the team brought medicine and supplies to treat more than 300 adults and children during their four-day mission.
Dr. Deedra McLain, medical director of SIU’s Physician Assistant Program, called the experience a powerful reminder of medicine’s fundamentals—treating patients with compassion, even without advanced tools.
The trip highlights SIU Medicine’s global commitment to care, wherever it’s needed.
