Everyone needs a little help now and then, and Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Thanks “GivingBack” food drive offers the opportunity to help Salukis in need this holiday season.

Faculty, staff and community members are invited to donate nonperishable food items for the Saluki Food Pantry, which has served thousands of students and their families since it opened in August 2016, on Nov. 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Donation drop-offs can be made in the first floor cross halls of the Student Center, near the University Bookstore. Those who are unable to drop off donations are encouraged to email foodpantry@siu.edu to make other arrangements.

“We served 280 students during the 2024-2025 academic year, and we’ve already served 239 students so far this semester,” said Emily Spann, associate director of the SIU Student Center. “The need is definitely there.”

Studies show that 36% of SIU’s students have limited or uncertain access to adequate food, which can have detrimental effects on their physical and mental health and academic performance, officials said. The Saluki Food Pantry, along with the HEROES (Higher Education Resources and Opportunities for Student in Need) program, work to address those basic needs. Students who visit the pantry typically receive enough food to feed themselves and members of their household for three days at no cost.

Some items especially needed

While all food gifts are appreciated, organizers encourage donors to consider the type of foods college-age students typically eat and know how to cook. The need is particularly great for:

  • Canned tuna, chicken, turkey, Vienna sausage and similar proteins.
  • Peanut butter and canned or dried beans.
  • Brown or white rice, oatmeal, cereal and pasta/boxed-pasta meals.
  • Spaghetti, tomato paste, canned tomatoes, Ramen noodles, chicken noodle soup, chili and similar sauces and soups.
  • Canned fruit or fruit cups, preferably with no added sugar.
  • Canned vegetables of all kinds.
  • Packaged/boxed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, cornbread.
  • Staples, including sugar, flour, salt and seasonings.
  • Jelly, jam, baking mixes, dressings (preferably low-fat.)

Monetary donations for the pantry to purchase food items are also welcomed online. In addition, the pantry has an Amazon wish list.

Located on the lower level of the Student Center, the Saluki Food Pantry is open three hours each weekday with hours varying from day to day to fit students’ diverse schedules.
