The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois is organizing its Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil to mark one year of devastating violence in Gaza.
As the situation in Gaza escalates, tensions are rising across the region, threatening to ignite a full-scale war involving Israel, Lebanon, Iran, and U.S. military forces deployed throughout the Middle East.
The vigil will highlight the need for urgent international action, with organizers urging the Biden administration to use its influence to push for a ceasefire.
They argue that continued U.S. support for Israeli military actions risks further destabilizing the region.
“The choice is between de-escalation and more war,” say organizers, citing the growing death toll, the expansion of the conflict, and the dire humanitarian situation on the ground in Gaza.
In addition to the vigil, a Rally for Peace in Gaza will take place, and the Carbondale Muslim Center will host a charity fundraiser lunch to raise money for those affected by the ongoing violence in Gaza.
This community effort aims to show solidarity with civilians suffering in the conflict and to call for peace through public pressure and diplomacy.
The vigil will be held at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave.
in Carbondale on October 5 from noon to 1:00 p.m. The rally and fundraiser will follow on October 6.
