Landline or Wireless? Lawmakers Take Up Telecom Debate

Several businesses, including AT&T, believe Illinois could create jobs by improving its wireless communications. They want the state to stop investing in land line technology.

They also say thousands of jobs were created from expanding wireless coverage.

Jim Chilsen is with the Citizens' Utility Board, which advocates for consumers. He says it would be great for all of Illinois to have wireless capability ... but not at the cost to senior citizens or low-income residents.

"We can't leave millions of consumers along the information highway, simply because their most affordable option is landline service. We need to protect those consumers."

Lawmakers will have the final say this summer, when they review the state's expiring telecommunications law.
