An estimated one in four adults in Illinois who search the treasurer's unclaimed property database can claim on average one thousand dollars.

An estimated one in four adults in Illinois who search the treasurer's unclaimed property database can claim on average one thousand dollars. Money in accounts where no activity has been detected for several years and the legal owner has not responded is safeguarded by the state.

State Treasurer Michael Frerichs says "It's the most wonderful time of year and returning money to the rightful owners is even more special during this season. Who wouldn't want extra money they forgot to pay for holiday gifts?"

Unclaimed funds can be from life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts, and unused rebate cards. The state has returned more than $1.9 million in unclaimed property. The Treasurer's Office recommends checking https://icash.illinoistreasurer.gov/ for missing money at least twice yearly.
