Attorney General Kwame Raoul filed a lawsuit arguing that President Donald Trump's executive order blocking birthright citizenship was unconstitutional.

Attorney General Kwame Raoul filed a lawsuit arguing that President Donald Trump's executive order blocking birthright citizenship was unconstitutional.

The lawsuit asserts that Trump's order, released today, violates constitutional rights guaranteed to all children born in the U.S.

The lawsuit also says that the order violates the 14th Amendment, the Immigration and Nationally Act, and the Administrative Procedure Act. It claims that the president has no authority to override these protections.

Raoul said quote, "We need to discuss bipartisan commonsense immigration reforms, but denying birthright citizenship, which dates back centuries and has been upheld twice by the U.S Supreme Court, is not the solution."

Today, the Attorney General filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, seeking to invalidate the order and relieve it from taking effect.
