Attorney General Kwame Raoul presented the proposed budget for the Attorney General's office for the next fiscal year.
He announced to the Senate legislative committee in Chicago that since 2019, his office has generated an average of $23.47 in revenue for every dollar of taxpayer funding received.
During the hearing, Raoul brought up the increased workload resulting from federal actions taken by the Trump administration, with 11 lawsuits and 14 amicus briefs filed this year.
The office is challenging the federal decisions to remove agencies like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, an organization created by Congress that Raoul says protects the financial security of older adults and other at-risk residents.
He also highlighted the increased responsibilities of the Attorney General's office under state law, as more than 65 child support enforcement attorneys transitioned to the office from DCFS.
The office also assumed the majority responsibility of the state's Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and its Consumer Fraud Bureau.
