Illinois officials are reaffirming that pregnant women have the right to life-saving emergency care-including abortion-in all Illinois hospitals. The reaffirmation comes after the Trump administration rescinded federal guidance protecting emergency abortion access.
Governor JB Pritzker called the rollback “cruel” and said Illinois law guarantees full reproductive care in life-threatening situations.
An amendment to the Hospital Emergency Services Act, passed in 2024, requires hospitals to comply or face penalties.
The Illinois Department of Public Health says it’s ensuring hospitals are informed of their obligations.
