The City of Cape Girardeau’s Water Treatment Plant experienced a mechanical failure this week.

Cape Girardeau City Leaders say the mechanical failure at the water treatment plant occurred in one of the city’s three clarifiers. Although plenty of safe, high-quality water is available now, the demand could challenge supply as summertime approaches.

Based on current projections and depending on weather conditions, maximum capacity will be reached by this May. The estimated cost of repairs is approximately $1 million and could take several months to complete.

Efforts are ongoing to identify the most efficient and effective solution to restore full operational capacity as soon as possible.

It is important to emphasize that this issue is solely related to water production capacity and does not affect water quality.

Residents can follow our maintenance updates via email subscription and register for water advisories at www.cityofcape.org/getalerts.
