Cape Girardeau, MO – Missouri Lt. Governor Peter Kinder filed a lawsuit Wednesday, challenging the federal healthcare overhaul plan.
Kinder believes that certain provisions of the law do not meet constitutional muster, such as the so-called "Gator Aid" provision that grandfathers Medicare Advantage patients in certain Florida counties. He's also challenging the requirement that all citizens carry health insurance.
Kinder says the law will bring additional financial burdens to the states. "But this is part of the grand design. To make more people dependant on the government. Like most ideas coming out of Washington now, the true cost of this program is a moving target. It continues to rise and remains, in important senses, in remains unknown and unknowable. Ultimately it may cause cash-strapped states like Missouri to force tax increases to pay for this law, which is also part of the design."
The lawsuit is not funded by the state of Missouri, but rather by private donors.
Kinder did not specify his contributors, but he stated that he will disclose that information later this year.
Kinder filed the lawsuit at the Rush H. Limbaugh Federal Courthouse in Cape Girardeau.
