Deer Bait is Illegal in Illinois During Hunting Season

By IL Radio Network

Springfield, IL – Deer hunting is not for the impatient. In fact, leaving food or food products as bait for wild deer is against state law. It carries a fine of up to $1,500 and the loss of your hunting privileges.

Paul Shelton, forest wildlife program manager for the Department of Natural Resources, says it's a health concern for the deer, particularly with the advent of chronic wasting disease. Bringing a number of deer together to eat the same things spreads germs.

This is in spite of the sale of salt licks and other products marketed as deer "attractant." Shelton says these products do have legal uses, such as feeding deer kept in captivity.

The firearm season for Illinois in 2010 is Nov. 19-21 and Dec. 3-5. Archery season is already under way in Illinois counties which allow it.
